Enrichment & Community

Our location provides access to opportunities across Middlesbrough, Redcar & Cleveland and North Yorkshire, allowing pupils to experience their community, practice important life skills and develop an understanding of the wider world.

At Riverstone Academy, enrichment is an important part of our educational offer. We believe every child should have opportunities to discover new interests, develop talents, build relationships and experience success beyond the classroom.

Our approach is carefully planned around each child’s individual starting point. We begin with familiar experiences, gradually introducing new environments and opportunities as pupils develop confidence, independence and the skills to participate in their wider community.

Our enrichment journey provides a flexible approach to broadening children’s experiences. Each stage builds upon developing confidence, communication, independence and participation.

Every child’s journey is different. Experiences are adapted, revisited and extended according to individual needs, interests and readiness

Enrichment Opportunities at Riverstone

Our enrichment offer extends beyond community visits. We aim to provide a broad range of experiences that encourage pupils to explore their interests, discover new opportunities and develop skills for life.

Bringing Experiences into Riverstone

We recognise that accessing unfamiliar environments can be challenging for some pupils. Enrichment therefore also takes place within our school environment.

Through visiting professionals, workshops, performances and shared experiences, we aim to bring new opportunities directly to pupils, allowing them to participate in ways that are meaningful and accessible.
As confidence develops, these experiences can provide valuable stepping stones towards accessing opportunities beyond school.

Enrichment with Purpose

At Riverstone, enrichment is about more than visiting new places. Each experience is carefully considered to support pupils’ personal development, curriculum learning and, where appropriate, individual EHCP outcomes.

Whether ordering a drink in a café, exploring an art gallery, participating in a sporting activity or contributing to a community project, pupils are developing valuable skills in communication, independence, emotional regulation, relationships and everyday life.
Pupil interests and voice help shape our enrichment offer, ensuring that experiences remain meaningful, enjoyable and responsive to the children at Riverstone.

Our ambition is for every child to leave Riverstone with greater confidence, broader experiences, new interests and a growing sense of what is possible for them.
